The Meaning Behind "Nechako"
This part of British Columbia is homeland of the Dakelh (da-kelh) people. Dakelh means people who "travel upon water". The Dakelh people are more commonly known as "Carrier Indians". The Carriers received their name from the custom involving dead warriors. The dead were disposed of by cremation and following the ceremony, the widow took any remaining charred bones from among the ashes and carried them in a leather satchel on her back. This was done until a potlatch ceremony arranged by the co-clansmen of the deceased was completed. For this ceremony, they prepared edibles and dressed skins for a great gathering of their own and neighbouring tribes. The Nechako River received its name from the Carrier Indian dialect. It means Incha-Khoh or Big River. The Nechako River is an important tributary of the Fraser River.

Nechako Learning Ladder was conceived over 5 years ago by my sister,
Noella. She had a desire to make quality CANADIAN products available to
'Homeschoolers'. It has now developed into something far greater than she
had originally imagined. While most customers are homeschooling families, a growing number are public/private school teachers, parents, grandparents and/or Bible class instructors. These committed individuals are also in the market for fun, quality learning material.
As my understanding of both the general and specific needs of my customers has grown, the emphasis on Canadian material has changed as well. You will notice, as you browse through the catalogue, that it contains many resources that were developed in the United States. Much of the material is still, of course, created here in our own country... complete with Canadian spelling, metric, and national culture. I have tried to provide as much suitable Canadian content as I can... and will continue to strive in this direction. However, there is a lot of valuable product coming from our Neighbours to the South that I know can benefit all of us. I carry as much Christian-based material as possible; however, there are many secular books included because of their otherwise excellent content.
